At Home Dental Care

Proper at home dental care is essential to cavity prevention and keeping your teeth healthy for years to come. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing and flossing at least twice a day, preferably after meals.  The proper way to brush and floss takes some time. You can’t rush through the process in 15 seconds and expect the best results. According to the ADA, you should spend two to three minutes brushing your teeth. They advise dividing your mouth into quadrants and concentrating on each section separately so no area gets missed. Changing your toothbrush or toothbrush head regularly, every two to three months, is also a good idea. This keeps the bristles from getting too soft.

Flossing helps remove food particles from between teeth that brushing can’t reach, and it is an essential part of preventative dental care. Flossing is recommended every time you brush your teeth, ideally before you brush so brushing can remove any particles you’ve unearthed with the floss. Gentle is the key word when flossing. You don’t want to damage your gums by snapping the floss against them.

Fluoride toothpastes and anti-cavity mouthwashes are another weapon in the cavity prevention arsenal. When used regularly, these products help stop tooth decay.
